This article documents differentials in patterns of exchange of aid and assistance between elderly American parents and their non-coresidential adult children by marital status and other components of family structure using data drawn from the National Survey of Families and Households. Descriptive results show that overall levels of giving and receiving support between elderly parents and their adult children are not especially high. However, these patterns vary considerably by marital status of the aging parent and of their adult children, with widowed and divorced parents less likely to provide support to their children. In contrast, widowed but not divorced parents are significantly more likely to receive support. Even with controls for demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the parents and availability of adult children, parents who are widowed or divorced give less to their children, although there are few marital-status differences for reception of support. The marital status of children appears to be less important to the exchange process. However, the proportion of children who are stepchildren exerts a strong negative influence on giving assistance to children. Among the other characteristics of family structure that exert an effect on exchanges, the number of adult children remains strongly positively associated with both giving and receiving most forms of support.
Past Trends, Present Determinants, Future Implications
This article addresses several specific questions which have arisen from speculation about the impact of recent social, economic, and demographic trends on the older family. The availability of and interaction with children among elderly Americans over the past two decades is examined. Causal models are used to explore the effects of social, economic, and demographic change on family interaction and living with a child. Finally, the implications of these findings for the future are reviewed. Analyses are based on the 1984 National Health Interview Survey Study on Aging and the 1962 and 1975 Survey of the Aged studies.
A Human Capital Hypothesis
The concept of human capital implies that education improves health because it increases effective agency. We propose that education’s positive effects extend beyond jobs and earnings. Through education, individuals gain the ability to be effective agents in their own lives. Education improves physical functioning and self-reported health because it enhances a sense of personal control that encourages and enables a healthy lifestyle. We test three specific variants of the human-capital and learned-effectiveness hypothesis: (1) education enables people to coalesce health-producing behaviors into a coherent lifestyle, (2) a sense of control over outcomes in one’s own life encourages a healthy lifestyle and conveys much of education’s effect, and (3) educated parents inspire a healthy lifestyle in their children. Using data from a 1995 national telephone probability sample of U.S. households with 2,592 respondents, ages 18 to 95, a covariance structure model produces results consistent with the three hypotheses.
Contributions of the REACH Project to the Development of New Measures for Alzheimer’s Caregiving
The aim of this study was to assess a newly developed measure for the positive aspects of caregiving using a sample of dementia caregivers. The measure was developed and administered to 1,229 participants in a national collaborative Alzheimer’s disease caregiver study and evaluated for validity and reliability using standard psychometric analyses. Factor analysis identified two components in this nine-item measure: Self-Affirmation and Outlook on Life. Cronbach’s alphas for the components were .86 and .80, respectively. For the entire scale, Cronbach’s alpha was .89. The Positive Aspects of Caregiving measure, tested with a large, diverse, and well-characterized sample shows promise as a valid and reliable instrument. With additional implementation and testing, the measure has the potential to substantially increase our understanding of basic caregiving research and the outcomes of intervention efforts.
This study explores the relationship between intergenerational social support and the psychological well-being of older Chinese parents. Effects of structural, functional, emotional, and appraisal social support on older Chinese parents’ well-being were tested by analyzing data collected from a random sample of 3,039 persons aged 55 and over who participated in the 1992 baseline survey of the Beijing Multidimensional Longitudinal Study on Aging (BMLSOA). Multiple regression is used to determine whether intergenerational exchanges of social support influence older parents’ morale. Findings reveal that providing instrumental support to children and satisfaction with children directly improve parents’well-being. The benefits of receiving support from children are fully mediated by parents’satisfaction with their children. The positive effects of providing functional support are magnified among parents who adhere to more traditional norms regarding family support. The results suggest that the psychological benefits of intergenerational support exchanges should not be ignored when developing elder care policy in China.
A Comparison of Types of Older Movers
This article examines the applicability of general migration selectivity principles for elderly movers. Demographic, socioeconomic, and housing characteristics of a 5% sample of elderly (60 years and older) drawn from the 1970 1 in 100 Public Use Sample are compared across distance mover types. Elderly migrants were selected from higher educational and income ranks, but local movers were selected from the more economically dependent strata. Implications of these findings for demographic theory and public policy for elderly programs are drawn.
Based on matched data from the 1982 National Long-Term Care Survey and the National Survey of Informal Caregivers, this article explores the degree to which separating adult children (N = 3,742) by the composition of their sibling network (i.e., only children, single-gender networks, and mixed-gender networks) provides insight into the association between gender and patterns of parent-care. Caregiving participation was calculated as a proportion of the availability of all children of a specific gender. The data reveal that, within all sibling network categories, daughters were more likely than sons to be providing care to an impaired parent; however, the repercussions of being a caregiver were not similarly uniform. Specifically, sons and daughters from only-child and single-gender networks reported a similar number of hours per day spent in parent-care and experienced comparable levels of stress and burden. In contrast, daughters from mixed-gender networks reported significantly higher levels of stress and burden and more hours per day spent caregiving than sons. These findings demonstrate that differentiating children by sibling network type does offer some clarity to our understanding of the complex association between gender and patterns of parent-care.
